World Cancer Day 2015 "Not Beyond Us"

February 4th 2015,  was set aside to mark the 2015 World Cancer Day, with a theme - "Not Beyond Us"

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide and accounted for 7.6 million deaths (around 15% of all deaths) in 2008. 66% of all cancer deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. Deaths from
cancer worldwide are projected to continue rising, with an estimated 13.1 million deaths in 2030.

Global Health Leaders Say Polio-free World Within Grasp

Ministers of health, health leaders and other global public health experts on Thursday 29th January 2015 attended the Executive Board (EB) meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, were encouraged by progress towards achieving a polio-free world. Yet they warned that as long as the disease remained anywhere, children everywhere are at risk. 

Nigeria Set to Introduce Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) into Routine Immunisation Schedule 11th February, 2015

Nigeria has made remarkable progress towards Polio Eradication.

Only six (6) cases of WPV type 1 were recorded in 2014 compared to 53 cases recorded in 2013.

Over 6 months have passed since the last case of wild poliovirus (WPV) type 1 was recorded.

However, at least 12 months must pass without detection of WPV, in the presence of certification quality surveillance, before Nigeria would be considered as having stopped transmission of WPV. -

As part of the Polio end game strategy recommended by the World Health Organisation which recommends the strengthening systems, introducing at least one dose of affordable IPV into the routine immunisation schedule globally and then replacing the trivalent OPV with bivalent OPV in all OPV-using countries.

Norway to Commit US$ 215 million a Year to GAVI between 2016 and 2020

The Norwegian Prime Minister  Ms Solberg announced at the Global Citizen Festival in New York, that Norway will increase its funding to Gavi to US$ 215 million for 2015 and then contribute at least the same amount each year for the 2016 to 2020 period. During this time, Gavi plans to help immunise an additional 300 million children, leading to five to six million lives being saved.
